Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur lead the race for Peterborough starlet Ronnie Edwards

According to Peterborough Telegraph, Tottenham Hotspur are the favourites to secure the signature of Peterborough starlet Ronnie Edwards ahead of the summer transfer window. He has impressed throughout this season in a side that has been battling to get out of the relegation zone.

Tottenham have been keeping tabs on Edwards for quite some time, but they are not alone in this transfer race. Several other clubs are in the fray, with one major German club tracking his situation right now. Moreover, an unknown German side are also in the pole position alongside Spurs. Posh director of football, Barry Fry, has personally confirmed that update.

“Spurs have been watching him for a long time, but so have other clubs. There is a big German club showing interest which is no real surprise as they love to take young English players and develop them.”

Fry expressed that they will sell the 19-year-old only if their club record fee is comfortably beaten by the interested party. The current record is Ivan Toney’s £10million transfer to Brentford, which took place back in 2020. Antonio Conte’s side have also been warned that the competition will increase when the youngster features for England in the Under 19 European Championship Finals in Slovakia this summer.

“That record would be smashed if we were to sell Ronnie. There was plenty of interest in him before he started playing regularly in the Championship and that interest will only grow further when he plays for England in the summer.”

Spurs to sign Edwards?

The English defender has certainly caught the attention of several clubs, with his excellent technical ability on the ball being his standout trait. That’s not all, as his ability to carry the ball into the midfield and provide numerical superiority has earned plaudits as well.

Perhaps, that could explain why we are interested in the Championship ace. After all, Conte utilises his two wide centre-backs in a way that they are more involved in the build-up phase. Edwards’ strengths certainly suit the tactics employed by the boss, but it would be too early for the youngster to make the jump to the first-team level.

Letting the Posh prospect stay with our academy set-up would not make sense either, considering how he is playing at a higher level in the England second division. Perhaps, we could take Fry’s words into consideration who suggested the player’s return to the club on loan.

“I’m not saying he will be sold as we haven’t had our planning meetings for next season yet, but, if he was to leave, ideally he’d go and be loaned straight back to us for a year. Nothing is likely to happen anyway until Ronnie comes back from his tournament this summer.”

An instant loan back to London Road Stadium would be a solid option, although a relegation would make the temporary move to Darren Ferguson’s side less attractive. With several other clubs also vying to finalise a move, we must take advantage of our lead and get this deal done as soon as possible.

However, we may not see any active developments until the summer transfer window if Fry’s words are anything to go by. We could use a centre-back in our ranks who can play as an understudy while being a star for the future. Whether Edwards will be that man or not remains to be seen.
