Tottenham engaged in heavy competition with several clubs for the new Yaya Toure
Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur to battle Aston Villa for Lens star Seko Fofana
According to the French news outlet But!Football Club via Sport Witness (h/t BirminghamLive), Tottenham Hotspur will battle it out with Aston Villa to finalise a move for Lens star Seko Fofana ahead of this summer. He has been excellent for his side since joining them back in 2020, although he has taken it up a notch this season.
Fofana, who is under contract until 2024, has earned quite a name for himself this term. That has seen him get linked with an exit elsewhere, with several clubs already expressing an interest in him. Tottenham are one of those, with Marseille, Olympique Lyonnais and Leicester City being the other parties.
However, Villa have now entered the fray, and they are stated to “strongly appreciate” the Ivorian. Newcastle United are also in the mix, and they have also been linked with him back in the January transfer window. AC Milan are another potential destination, but they could target him only if they miss out on Renato Sanches.
Fofana- a summer signing?
The 26-year-old, who has previously been named the “new Yaya Toure“, has scored nine goals alongside an assist this season from 36 matches across all competitions. That is a great return, especially for a central midfielder who is very much involved in different areas of the pitch.
Antonio Conte would probably be delighted with someone like the Ligue 1 ace since we lack a midfielder who can get involved in the goal involvements. We have not had someone like that in the team since Dele Alli left us, although even Alli had not showcased such output for a while.
A midfield general, who is equally involved in the defence and the build-up play, it is no wonder why Steven Gerrard’s side are keen admirers of Fofana. As such, we need to be wary of their interests as it adds more competition to this transfer race.

With a cluster of interested parties already being involved in this pursuit, we could be in line for a stern challenge up ahead if there are active plans to sign the African. However, we must do our best to facilitate a move at all costs since we only have four options in midfield right now.
That is not ideal, especially in a long season when we would need to face off in several competitions at once. Having a blend of good quality and solid depth would be the key to getting through many fixtures across all these fronts. Hence, Fofana should be considered a necessary signing but let’s wait and see whether the North Londoners share a similar stance or not.
