Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur express interest to sign Brighton star Marc Cucurella

According to the Spanish publication Fichajes (h/t The Argus), Tottenham Hotspur have expressed their interest in signing Brighton star Marc Cucurella ahead of the summer transfer window. They are planning a squad overhaul at the end of this season and have taken this stance as a result.

Antonio Conte wants to strengthen his defensive options this summer, and he wants to secure Cucurella’s services for that reason. That is not surprising, to say the least, as the full-back has been one of Brighton and Hove Albion’s best performers and is among the contenders for the club’s player of the season.

Tottenham are looking to raise the quality of their squad in an attempt to back Conte moving forward. As such, Cucurella is also joined by other targets for different positions like Southampton’s James Ward-Prowse and Inter Milan duo Stefan de Vrij and Alessandro Bastoni.

Spurs need Cucurella?

It is pretty well-known at this point how wing-backs are crucial for Conte and his system. As such, the interest in Cucurella is not a surprise since we could use an addition on the left-hand side of the defence.

Ryan Sessegnon has continued to struggle with his hamstring issues which cast serious doubts over his long term availability. As for Reguilon, he has shown promise under the Italian boss but has failed to take the next step in his path to progression.

The former Real Madrid star is a key player but can always use some quality backup. Cucurella can even provide him competition for starts. The wing-backs constitute an important part of Conte’s philosophy and hence, options in those positions can only help the Italian.

That being said, prising away Cucurella would be a stern challenge indeed since he only joined the Seagulls last year. What’s more, the 23-year-old had signed a five year contract which gives Graham Potter’s side more control over his future prospects.

It also remains to be seen if the Seagulls would be selling for him less than the £16million they paid to secure his signature from Getafe last summer. That is especially the case with his long contract indicating that obstacle that awaits us after this term.

It is best to wait and see how this situation will turn out to be in the coming months ahead of the summer transfer window. It will also be interesting to see what happens to Ben Davies if a left-back joins Spurs.

The ex-Swansea City star has filled in as a left-sided centre-back but has made a name for himself as a left-back for the Swans and the Welsh national team.
