Son Heung-Min disappointed with Tottenham Hotspur result despite impressive draw vs Liverpool

Son Heung-Min was left disappointed on the night despite Tottenham Hotspur enjoying a good result against a strong and in-form Liverpool team. He scored the goal for his side in the 1-1 draw, which was later cancelled out by a deflected strike from Luis Diaz.

Tottenham’s game plan was pretty clear from the get-go as they sat back and hit on the counters just as they did against Manchester City. While the visitors were at the receiving end of constant pressure from the Reds, it was Antonio Conte’s side who enjoyed the better chances in the fixture. However, they failed to make use of the opportunities and had to settle for a point in the end.

Speaking in the post-match interview with BT Sport (h/t Evening Standard), Son expressed his frustration for failing to take advantage of the chances that they received. He admitted that even a point against Jurgen Klopp’s side is a great result but mentioned that they should have won the match looking at the opportunities.

“It was a big game, Anfield is obviously not easy. It is a big point but gutted we didn’t make it [three] at the end. Sometimes we need to defend and we did well today. This was our game plan and we could do better with the ball. We work at attacking as a team. We know where to run, which player will be free. This was perfect for our game plan, I am proud but it should be more.”

Understandable

Fans would fully understand why the South Korean attacker feels that way, especially with the way the game ended on the night. We had a great opportunity to knick a win at the death with Harry Kane being left alone in a similar position to where Son was in his first goal.

However, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg mistimed his header following a cross from Emerson Royal, and the chance went begging as the ball went behind Kane. But that was not the only opportunity that we could have taken better in the match.

Son himself had a great chance to double the scoring, just after he netted the first goal of the league fixture. However, he failed to get himself into a good position as Ryan Sessegnon’s cut-back was too close for him to react with precision and the resulting shot went agonisingly wide as a result. He currently has 20 league goals, just 2 short of Mohamed Salah who leads the race for the Golden Boot this season.

We could have been the victors if those chances were taken better, so it is understandable why the 29-year-old feels disappointed with the result. Moreover, the outcome was made worse because of how we lost footing in the top four race in the Premier League table.

Arsenal are firmly in contention to achieve Champions League qualification at the moment, which makes the draw even more frustrating, to say the least. However, all is not lost as we can still make it if the Gunners drop points in the remainder of this season.

Mikel Arteta’s side is set to take on Leeds United later today so let’s wait and see how that match will pan out at the end of the day. That could determine how crucial the North London derby would be in the future.
