Tottenham Hotspur could sign another left wing-back despite Ivan Perisic transfer agreement

According to Evening Standard, Tottenham Hotspur could still decide to sign another left wing-back despite reaching an agreement with Ivan Perisic over a transfer move. They have already made some rumblings in the market in an attempt to back Antonio Conte with his desired targets.

Perisic has agreed to join Tottenham on a two-year contract after leaving Inter Milan for free this summer. He will also earn a salary of around £100,000-a-week with some signing-on bonuses included in the deal as well. He is expected to play as a left wing-back but can also feature as a left-winger as well.

As such, Spurs could decide to target another left wing-back since the Croatian international can also be utilised in other positions like right-wing or as a right wing-back. Filip Kostic of Eintracht Frankfurt is one such option, having earned keen admiration from those at N17.

Sensible decision?

It is good to see that the North London side are open about this matter as there are uncertainties in several other positions. Steven Bergwijn, for example, could seriously leave the club, having struggled to gain meaningful game time under Conte over the past few months.

Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Bergwijn is targeted by Ajax Amsterdam and several other clubs, making his exit likely this summer. The Dutch international’s potential departure could open up a space for Perisic in the left-wing role. The latter could be a solid backup indeed for Son Heung-Min, especially when rotations could be key to managing through a long season.

Sergio Reguilon is also expected to leave Conte’s side following Perisic’s arrival this summer. Reguilon has already been offered to several clubs in Spain, with Real Madrid also holding an option to re-sign him with the help of a buy-back clause ahead of the next campaign.

In such a case, it is understandable why we are targeting another left wing-back with Ryan Sessegnon’s fitness woes continuing yet again due to another recent injury. Kostic would undoubtedly be a great addition indeed, as he has been immense for Frankfurt over the past few seasons.

In fact, it can even be argued that Kostic has been one of the best left wing-backs in the Bundesliga in recent years. Signing the Serb would be a massive statement from our side as it would clearly indicate our plans to raise the squad’s quality to challenge for trophies moving forward.

Now we have to wait and see whether the hierarchy would decide to go down this route or not in the coming weeks. Perhaps, their stance would be influenced by Reguilon and Bergwijn’s future so let’s also keep a close eye on the duo’s situation as well.
