Steven Bergwijn wants to leave Tottenham Hotspur amid a lack of game time

In a conversation with Dutch media outlet Algemeen Dagblad (h/t Football.London), Tottenham Hotspur forward Steven Bergwijn has confirmed his desire to leave the club ahead of the following summer transfer window.

It wouldn’t be a surprise for many fans to hear that Bergwijn would like to leave Tottenham Hotspur and return to the Netherlands in order to play regular first-team football. It has now been confirmed by the player himself.

Bergwijn stated in statements published by Algemeen Dagblad (h/t Football.London) that he wants to figure out his future as soon as his obligations with the Netherlands national team are over. The 24-year-old winger scored in the Nations League’s 4-1 thrashing of Belgium on Friday, extending his recent series of strong performances for his nation.

“Have I talked to [Ajax coach] Alfred Schreuder about my future? I’m at Oranje now and then we’ll have a look. It would be nice if there was clarity soon. I just have to go play, but I want to leave Spurs now, that’s for sure,”

Bergwijn has piqued Ajax’s interest in the Eredivisie, with the Dutch club supposedly making a transfer approach late last week. This is a continuation of Ajax’s interest in the Dutchman from last winter; it appeared like Bergwijn might leave in January, but no deal was reached.

However, it appears that all parties have decided that relocating outside of North London is the best option. As of now, there are no signs that Ajax and Tottenham are close to agreeing on a deal for Bergwijn, but there should be further talks in the coming days and weeks.

Despite pivotal efforts in certain games, Bergwijn’s overall impact remains ambiguous. For a lengthy period of time, the youngster has been unable to sustain his consistency and has failed to gain Conte’s faith.

Bergwijn had a poor 2021/22 season.

Throughout the season, Conte has favoured Harry Kane and Son Heung-min, and they have remained one of, if not the most, lethal Premier League duos. However, in the event that his primary forwards are injured or need to rest throughout the campaign, the Italian manager will be short on options.

With the FIFA World Cup in Qatar still to come this year, seats on the plane carrying Louis van Gaal to the Middle East will be restricted. Bergwijn would recognise the need for consistent playing time at the club level when picking final squads.

Considering the aforementioned reason, it is highly likely that the Dutch star would push for an exit in the summer transfer window. Dejan Kulusevski has only gone from strength to strength down that right flank, so it is clear that the ex-PSV man would not be getting a free run at regular starts at N17.

Hopefully, this saga comes to an end as soon as possible for the sake of everyone involved. We can mark this down as a transfer that just didn’t work out. There are bound to be those every now and then, after all.
