Tottenham striker Harry Kane celebrates 50th England goal

Tottenham Hotspur marksman Harry Kane celebrated his 50th international goal as England earned a 1-1 draw against Germany in the Nations League on Tuesday.

Germany took the lead via Jonas Hoffman in the 50th minute and it looked like England were headed for their second straight defeat in Group A3, following their 1-0 loss to Hungary last week.

The Spurs vice-captain stepped up for his nation like he has done time and again. In the 88th minute, Kane was brought down by Germany’s Nico Schlotterbeck inside the box which resulted in a penalty for England.

The Three Lions captain stepped up and tucked away the spot-kick with fine aplomb, sending Manuel Neuer the wrong way. As confirmed by the club’s official Twitter account, Kane is now the second English player to score 50 for the senior side.

Kane now trails Wayne Rooney who leads the nation’s goalscoring charts by a mere three strikes. It would appear to be a question of when and not if he will surpass the Manchester United legend.

Speaking to Channel 4 (h/t Metro) after the game, the 28-year-old said,

“I love scoring goals, I have always loved it especially for my country. Whenever I can help the team, I am glad to do that.

Spurs and England – a special connection?

Tottenham have always had a storied history when it comes to Lilywhite forwards performing for the national side. Club legends Gary Linekar and Jimmy Greaves have 48 and 44 England goals respectively, which put them 4th and 5th in the list of England’s all-time top scorers.

Despite personal heroics, Kane’s goal did little to see England rise up the table. The draw against Germany keeps the Three Lions bottom of their Nations League group, as Southgate’s preparations for the World Cup in Qatar endure some turbulence.
