Lucas Moura very likely to stay at Tottenham next season despite game-time struggles
Brazilian winger Lucas Moura feels confident that he will stay at Tottenham Hotspur next season, despite struggling for game-time under Antonio Conte.
The 29-year-old has been linked with a move away from North London this summer, with Moura’s former club Sau Paulo interested in bringing the Brazilian back to his native.
However, they are seemingly not keen on paying any transfer fee to Spurs and thus will wait for the player’s contract to run down which is due to happen next summer. Speaking on the matter to Brazilian news outlet Band (h/t Football London), he said,
“Hardly anything will happen in this window. I will hardly leave Tottenham. Of course, we never know what will happen. But it’s very likely that I will stay, I already had a conversation with the club, they are interested in me staying.
“Even more so with the Champions League spot, so I feel very motivated for next season, to continue.”
Tottenham signed Moura from Paris St-Germain in the winter transfer window of 2018 and since then, he has established his status as a cult hero amongst the Spurs faithful. The winger has played 201 games for Spurs, scoring 38 goals and providing 27 assists.
None of those, however, are more remembered than his astonishing hat-trick against Ajax Amsterdam in the Champions League semi-final which took Spurs through to their first ever final in Europe’s premier club competition.
Can Moura still play an important role at Spurs?
Under Conte, the Brazilian featured in 34 Premier League games last season, bu
t only 19 of those have been starts. The arrival of Dejan Kulusevski on loan last winter and his continued excellence in his role has pushed Moura down the pecking order. While Moura may not be guaranteed a start every week, he still could have an important role to play under Conte.
