Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur are in the chase for talented left-back Owen Wijndal

According to Frenco outlet FootMercato (h/t Daily Express), Tottenham Hotspur have begun negotiations with AZ Alkmaar for offensive left-back Owen Wijndal.

Wijndal, a Dutch left-back who scored a goal and had 12 assists in 43 games across all competitions this season, was one of the architects of AZ Alkmaar’s successful season in the league, which saw them qualify for the Europa Conference League. His performances have piqued the curiosity of some European elite clubs.

It is believed that Tottenham is also in talks with a club in the west of the Netherlands to gain the services of the Dutch international, who has an £8.5million release clause. The 22-year-old defender, who is attracting interest from Olympique Lyonnais, Napoli, and Juventus, is expected to be one of the future executives of the Dutch national team.

Wijndal, a product of Alkmaar’s own development programme, has risen quickly through the ranks in recent seasons. During the 2019/20 season, he broke through with his quickness and athleticism on the flanks, making him his team’s first-choice option in that position.

Wijndal, a left-back by trade, has played in 140 competitive games and has collected 26 assists and scored four goals. His impressive statistics reflect his offensive skill, but he is no slouch in defence, with good recovery pace and reading of the game.

Due to a lack of depth in the Tottenham team, Antonio Conte has had to make a bit of compromise down the left flank. The young and attacking Ryan Sessegnon often deputized when Sergio Reguilon was unavailable for selection.

Ben Davies, meanwhile, played largely as a left-sided centre-back. And despite the fact that the Spurs recently signed Perisic, the Croatian star’s age might become an issue down the road.

The 22-year-old can improve Tottenham’s left-back options. His ability to make forward runs out wide should improve their creative style, but getting the Dutch international could be difficult, especially because of the competition involved.

On paper, we may look like we have three left-backs right now. But it is important to remember that none of them were signed by Conte. If the Italian really wants the Dutchman, there would be a reason behind it and the board would be wise to back the serial winner.
