Middlesbrough star Djed Spence wants Tottenham Hotspur transfer move this summer
According to The Athletic, Middlesbrough star Djed Spence has made up his mind to move to Tottenham Hotspur in this summer transfer window. He has attracted a host of attention from several clubs following his impressive loan spell with Nottingham Forest in the last campaign.
Despite being contracted with Boro until 2024, it looks like Spence is in line to leave them ahead of the next season. Tottenham are one of the sides that are actively pursuing to secure his signature, and now the youngster has shown his preference to join them this summer.
The prospect of teaming up with Antonio Conte, coupled with Champions League football, is thought to be the deciding factor that prompted the English starlet to take this stance. That would certainly favour Spurs as it significantly boosts their chances of completing a move for the full-back.
Spence to join Spurs?
Spence has been among the best young talents in the 2021-22 Championship campaign, so it is no wonder why many clubs are targeting him as of now. He instantly became a regular for Forest and made 46 appearances for them across all competitions, scoring thrice and assisting five times in the process.
The 21-year-old’s energy and willingness to always be involved in the team’s play have made him an attractive prospect indeed. His immense engine and grit have given him the foundations to succeed in the attacking third and the defensive half as well.
In such a case, it is understandable why we are chasing the Championship ace right now, as his qualities certainly suit Conte’s tactics. It is quite well-known how wing-backs have a greater role in the boss’ system as they are heavily involved across all build-up phases.
That is the reason why Emerson Royal struggled for a large part under the Italian coach last season. The former’s inability to be influential in the attack led to his poor run of form, although he did turn things around at the very end. But it looks like that may not be enough for him to warrant a spot in the upcoming campaign.

After all, Matt Doherty would probably stay moving forward as he was arguably our best wing-back before suffering the long-term injury. Selling him would not make sense in any case, which leaves Emerson in a troubled spot.
Parting ways with Emerson would be a harsh decision indeed, as his struggles could be down to the adaptation phase after joining us just last summer. However, with Spence being available, it is understandable why we are in talks with Neil Warnock’s side over the transfer fee involved.
