Brighton identify Tottenham Hotspur star Steven Bergwijn as a potential summer transfer target

According to the Spanish publication Marca (h/t Yorkshire Evening Post), Brighton have identified Tottenham Hotspur star Steven Bergwijn as a potential target in this summer transfer window. His future is currently clouded by uncertainty, which has seen him get linked with a departure ahead of the next season.

Bergwijn has already expressed his desire to leave Tottenham Hotspur, having struggled to earn consistent minutes under Antonio Conte. His stance is certainly understandable, especially considering how the 2022 Qatar World Cup is edging closer with each passing day at this moment.

Brighton and Hove Albion are now interested in signing the Dutch international to bolster their frontline ahead of the upcoming campaign. Their approach is quite courageous but acceptable at the same time as they would probably be looking to build on their highest-ever finish in the Premier League in their history under Graham Potter last season.

Bergwijn to join Brighton?

It is quite frustrating to see how we might be losing out on a talented attacker like Bergwijn this summer. The winger has been solid whenever he has received a decent run of minutes consistently, which is quite indicative of his massive quality.

Unfortunately, the 24-year-old’s direct competitor is Son Heung-Min, who is arguably on the back of his best-ever campaign donning the Spurs shirt. In such a case, Conte cannot be blamed for not playing Bergwijn more regularly, especially when we only had the PL to play for in the second half of the previous season.

If Bergwijn remains adamant that he wants to depart at all costs, then we should accept his demands and allow him to leave in this window. After all, keeping him against his wishes would not be ideal and would probably disrupt the squad harmony within the team.

The former PSV Eindhoven man has previously conveyed that his utmost priority is to play regular minutes, and he would be open not to playing in the Champions League for that reason. As such, there is a possibility that he would be willing to team up with the Seagulls if they can convince him of their project.

We did sign Ivan Perisic recently, so his versatility to play as a left-winger could prove to be useful should Bergwijn leave in the end. Bryan Gil has also returned from his loan spell at Valencia, so it will be interesting to see if he would play a part in Conte’s plans moving forward.

It is claimed that the North Londoners want at least £25million for Bergwijn, with Ajax also having shown an intent to sign him this summer. That, coupled with the Seagulls’ interest, could perhaps assist us in meeting the forward’s valuation.
