Tottenham Hotspur ready to make offer for Bayer Leverkusen centre-back Piero Hincapie
Tottenham are readying an offer of £34.5 million for Bayer Leverkusen centre-back Piero Hincapie, according to German outlet Kicker (h/t football.london).
The 20-year-old has a contract keeping him at the BayArena until 2026, but Antonio Conte is interested in bringing the young Ecuadorian to the Premier League.
Making a move from the Argentinian first-tier to Leverkusen just last year, Hincapie is a promising defender. Playing the majority of his debut season at left-back, the 20-year-old has also been deployed at centre-back on occasions by manager Gerardo Seoane.
Should Spurs go for Hincapie?
Standing at 1.84m, Hincapie makes his presence known. The Ecuadorian featured 33 times for the German club last season, starting 25 games. The Ecuadorian helped his team finish third in the Bundesliga and qualify for the UEFA Champions League.
The 20-year-old has proven himself in his first season, which is why Conte is looking to bring him to North London. Under the Italian manager’s system, Hincapie could slot in at the left of the back three.
While Ben Davies has been adept at covering up in the left-centre-back position, lapses in concentration on occasions have led to Spurs conceding goals. A natural left-back, the Welshman has done his best for Conte.
If the Ecuadorian youngster ends up signing for the Lilywhites, Conte would have more options to choose from when it comes to finding his preferred backline.
Eric Dier handled the defence to the best of his abilities last seaso
n and was one of Spurs’ standout players. Cristian Romero is another player who has made a difference at the back when he’s been fit.Davinson Sanchez has provided cover when needed but hasn’t played as much when Romero has been fit. Joe Rodon and Japhet Tanganga have remained in the squad as backup options but have been used rarely.

It remains to be seen whether Tottenham make a bid for Hincapie and whether Leverkusen accept a reasonable offer for a player with a contract until 2026.
But Spurs know they need to strengthen at the back and there aren’t a lot of talented young defenders on the market than Hincapie right now.
