Transfer news: Tottenham Hotspur have joined the chase for St Mirren’s teenage sensation Murray Campbell
According to Pete O’Rourke via Twitter (h/t football.london), Tottenham Hotspur have joined in the race to sign defender Murray Campbell from Scottish side St Mirren.
The 16-year-old Scotsman has been on the shortlist of Leicester City, Crystal Palace and Southampton. And now Tottenham seem to have joined the race for the youngster.
St Mirren hope to persuade the talented defender to sign a professional contract with them when he turns 16 this month. Campbell is currently in Belfast, training with the St Mirren’s first team.
A Scotland Under-16 star, he has made 2 appearances for his country. St Mirren manager, Stephen Robinson is said to be a big admirer of the young defender.
One for the future
He could well be one for the future for Tottenham. Should Spurs sign him, he would be most likely sent to the Spurs academy- with Tottenham Hotspur Academy one of the more elite training camps in English football.
Antonio Conte has been busy revamping his squad this summer. He has already signed Ivan Perisic, Yves Bissouma, Fraser Forster and Richarlison. Apart from this, Spurs have also signed Ireland Under-19 goalkeeper Josh Keeley and 17-year-old Tyrell Ashcroft from Reading Under -23 to their own.
This shows that Tottenham are not only building a team for the present, but also one for the future. And Campbell could be a part of that future. A teenage sensation already, he could be the next big thing at Tottenham.
But it may not be easy for Spurs to get his signature. His parent club would try to keep their potential future star at the club for some time while Tottenham could also face competition from other rival clubs for his signature.

It will be interesting to see where the young man’s future lies. But considering the interest in him from rival clubs, Tottenham will hope that his future lies at Hotspur Way. A defender by trade, he can deputise in midfield as well.
16 is too early to determine a player’s strongest position anyway. We will know more about the youngster as time passes but with his name now linked with Spurs, our fans can now start focussing on his progress.
