Cameron Carter-Vickers believes it was important for him to leave Tottenham Hotspur this summer

Speaking with The Times (Subscription Required), Cameron Carter-Vickers opened up about his permanent transfer to Celtic from Tottenham Hotspur this summer. The 24-year-old believes it was the right move for him after failing to establish himself in North London.

The Southend-born American international wanted to make his loan move to Celtic last season permanent this summer and said that it was an easy decision to make.

“I think I kind of knew Tottenham’s stance before the end of the season,”

“I didn’t really have to go back in the summer and speak to him. So, yes, it was quite easy, quite simple … if the clubs could agree a fee.”

The centre-back feels it was important that he left Tottenham this summer after spending most of his time out on loan in his time being contracted to the club.

“It was important for me finally to get away from Tottenham. I was linked with a few Premier League clubs but it was never anything concrete and I was always set from the end of last season that I wanted to sign for Celtic.”

Carter-Vickers played an essential role for the Scottish side last season on loan. Featuring in 45 games for the Glasgow-based club, the 24-year-old helped the side to the Scottish Premiership and the Scottish League Cup.

After an impressive season with Celtic, the American international decided to move to Scotland permanently. Previously, the 24-year-old has represented sides like Swansea, Bournemouth, Sheffield United and Stoke City, among other clubs.

The player has never really had a chance to play for Spurs. The academy product has been with the North London side since the age of eight but has only ever represented Tottenham five times in his career.

A move to Celtic the right decision

Carter-Vickers has managed to make a place for himself in the American side as well after an impressive season in Scotland. The 24-year-old now has 10 caps for his national side. With the centre-back’s £6 million move from Spurs to Celtic, fans of the Scottish side will hope the American can continue his form.

With the World Cup round the corner, a spot in the national side going to Qatar is something most players will wish for. And if he had stayed in the North London side, the American had players to compete with for game-time in Antonio Conte’s squad.

Eric Dier, Cristian Romero, Davinson Sanchez and Ben Davies last season were the players the Italian manager trusted to be in his back three. While there’s no way of knowing how Conte would’ve used Carter-Vickers if he had stayed, fans will feel a move to Celtic is best for the 24-year-old’s overall development.
