Fabrizio Romano: Clement Lenglet is set to sign for Tottenham Hotspur on loan from Barcelona

French centre-back Clement Lenglet is set to sign for Tottenham Hotspur on loan from Barcelona, according to Fabrizio Romano on Twitter. The 27-year-old will join on a season-long loan until June 2023 and the Frenchman has already accepted Spurs’ proposal.

Currently, the North London side and the Blaugrana are working out the final details of the transfer. As of yet, an option to make the deal permanent has not been included in the deal.

With the signing close to being completed, Antonio Conte will have a left-footed centre-back in the team. Lenglet is an experienced defender, having played in the biggest competitions for one of European football’s giants.

An Important signing

Having played Ben Davies out of position last season as a left centre-back, the gaffer now has a natural option for the position in the team. The Welshman was adept at cutting out threats and his pace gave our defence an extra dimension.

The 29-year-old played at centre-back for the majority of last season under Conte and the trust the Italian showed in him reflects on Davies’ performances. The Welshman started 28 games in the Premier League last term as the Lilywhites managed to clinch a top-four spot.

Lenglet coming gives Davies another player to compete against and it’ll be fascinating to see who Conte decides will make it into our backline. What the Frenchman gives the boss is another body to rely upon in defence. With the North London side’s injury concerns last season, squad depth is a key aspect going into next season.

Also, Joe Rodon and Japhet Tanganga haven’t really been able to get into the first XI and Conte didn’t seem to trust them after taking over the side in November. This makes the signing of a centre-back even more important for our team; especially one Conte has approved.

Lenglet has seen his influence dwindle in the Barcelona side and the hunger to prove himself once again in a top European side is something fans will hope drives the Frenchman to greatness.
