Dwight Gayle’s move to Middlesbrough depends on Tottenham Hotspur completing Djed Spence deal

Middlesbrough are interested in Newcastle United forward Dwight Gayle but are unable to get the move done unless Djed Spence completes his move to Tottenham Hotspur, according to the print edition of the Daily Star (h/t Chronicle Live).

Boro want to bring the 32-year-old to the Riverside Stadium as manager Chris Wilder is interested in the centre-forward’s services. Spurs are yet to complete the signing of the North Yorkshire side’s full-back, which is holding up any move Middlesbrough may want to make for Gayle.

Antonio Conte has rebuilt the side since his arrival in November. Now, the Italian is being backed by the board this summer and the North London side is making good progress in the transfer window to fulfil Conte’s wishes.

Spence is close to being one of the many new signings made by the Lilywhites, signifying our boss putting his own stamp on the team. We already have two right full-backs in the side in Emerson Royal and Matt Doherty. Now, Tottenham are moving in to add a third with the signing of the 21-year-old Englishman.

Spurs could capitalise

Out on loan to Nottingham Forest last season, Spence was praised for his performances in the Championship. The Tricky Trees were successful in their bid for promotion to the Premier League and the full-back was a big part of it.

Under Conte, our full-backs have been given the license to bombard from the wings and create an attacking threat down the sides. Spence has the ability to play a bit further up, as was evident from his performances last season.

In 46 appearances for Forest, the right-back played almost half of those games in a more advanced position. The 21-year-old also contributed three goals and four assists in his time with the Tricky Trees.

Boro’s interest in the Magpies forward may prove to be a good thing for us. With Middlesbrough depending on Spence’s sale, it might bode well for Tottenham during the negotiations.

Hopefully, the deal for Spence hastens. The pre-season tour is upon us and any new player would benefit with the extra time they can get to gel with the squad before the new season.
