Transfer News: Raheem Sterling snubbed Tottenham Hotspur for Chelsea
Manchester City’s Premier League-winning star Raheem Sterling has joined Chelsea, and according to The Athletic via CFCDaily (h/t football.london), the 27-year-old opted against a move to Tottenham Hotspur because he wanted to join an “elite” side.
It’s being said that Sterling wanted to join a big European club, which is a reason for rejecting Spurs and Arsenal. It would appear that Chelsea classifies as ‘elite’ for the English international.
Sterling spent seven years at Manchester City and won many trophies in his time with the Cityzens. Pep Guardiola has moulded the player into one of the best in the world and losing out on him is an opportunity missed for Antonio Conte.
Joining the Sky Blues in 2015 from Liverpool, the then 20-year-old was just in the infancy of his career. Since then, Sterling has grown a lot in terms of his ability and reputation on the pitch.
Tottenham blessed with options
At Tottenham though, Antonio Conte is blessed with options currently. Spurs fans would argue that some of our forwards are better than the 27-year-old.
Harry Kane and Son Heung-min have shown the world what they’re capable of in recent years. The duo have created a formidable partnership and also boast a combined four Premier League Golden Boots.
Arrivals in January have also made an impact on the Spurs’ roster. Dejan Kulusevski surprised many in the stands with his ability and the 22-year-old could be in for a great season in 2022/23.
Brazilian striker Richarlison was signed for big money this summer and much-needed depth to the centre-forward position. Lucas Moura and Ivan Perisic are also capable enough to play in the Spurs’ attack.

Under the right circumstances, any team would want a player like Sterling in their squad. The 27-year-old is a game changer and is still relatively young. It remains to be seen how he goes about his business in London.
