Tottenham Hotspur may be handed a boost in Pau Torres race as Manchester United sign Lisandro Martinez
Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag opted against signing Tottenham Hotspur-linked Pau Torres this summer, as per The Telgraph (Subscription Required). This could give Spurs the upper hand in their pursuit of the 25-year-old Spaniard, according to football.london.
United’s new boss decided to go after former player Lisandro Martinez from Ajax. It remains to be seen what they decide to do about Torres.
Tottenham have also been linked with the 25-year-old. The left-footed centre-back is someone fans wouldn’t mind having at the club. But whether Tottenham can negotiate a price for the Spaniard is the question.
Spurs have had an eventful summer transfer window with multiple arrivals coming into the squad to strengthen every area of the pitch. With a bolstered squad at Antonio Conte’s disposal, expectations are set to be high.
The defence was one of the sticking points in the team. Injuries were a big issue with Cristian Romero sidelined for most of the season. The Argentine was arguably one of the best centre-backs in the team when he played.
Japhet Tanganga’s injuries came at an inopportune time as well. The youngster was making a place for himself in the new gaffer’s squad before being dealt a setback. Eric Dier was the only constant in the first XI.
Conte’s lack of trust in other options was also a problem as Ben Davies, a natural left-back, was deployed at centre-back for most of the campaign. The Italian only used Davinson Sanchez in the team when other players weren’t fit enough.

Going into next season, if we want to have any chance of fighting for trophies, our defence is an important area to look at. Conte needs to be given players he trusts. And on paper, Pau Torres is someone the Italian can hang his hat on.
