Tottenham star Ryan Sessegnon reveals Ivan Perisic’s advice helped him score vs Southampton

Ryan Sessegnon and Ivan Perisic are set to compete for a starting spot in Tottenham Hotspur’s starting XI this season. The 22-year-old has been here for a few seasons since he was bought from Fulham.

Perisic, meanwhile, only joined Spurs this summer on a free transfer from Inter Milan. 33 years old and still going strong, it is clear Antonio Conte likes him a lot.

The two worked to great effect at Inter Milan and the Italian manager wants to replicate that dynamic down the left flank once again. What Conte likes to see from his full-backs is for them to attack and get into scoring positions.

That is exactly what Sessegnon did against Southampton on Saturday. Trailing 1-0, the Englishman was on hand at the back post to head home Dejan Kulusevski’s cross.

Big game for Sessegnon

Speaking after the game (h/t Football.London), the former Fulham starlet told reporters that Perisic advised him to target Kyle Walker-Peters because of the right-back’s height. The 1.74m tall Walker-Peters was cleanly beaten by Sessegnon for the ball in the air.

“Even for the goal today, he literally told me get in the back post and you will score. That helped me today. He said Kyle Walker-Peters is quite small at the back post so if a ball goes in make sure you are there to head it in.”

It is always good to see the veterans passing on their wisdom to the younglings, especially ones that are earmarked to potentially replace them in the future. This was an important performance for Sessegnon in a game where Spurs were dominant and won 4-1.

His place in the starting XI – both now and for the future- has been under incredible threat lately. Not only did Spurs bring in Perisic this summer, but they are also close to signing 19-year-old Italian left-back Destiny Udogie from Udinese.
