Transfer News: Chelsea hold talks to sign Tottenham Hotspur target Ronnie Edwards
According to Peterborough United FC director of football Barry Fry, Chelsea have entered the race to sign Ronnie Edwards, who has also been linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur.
The Blues were apparently watching on from the stands when the Posh took on Cheltenham and Morecambe in their first two League One games this season. According to Fry (h/t Peterborough Today):
“I’ve had conversations with people at Chelsea who are in the know and who would be involved in any decision-making. They came to watch Lucas, but they were taken by Ronnie. They haven’t made a bid yet, but there are three weeks until the transfer window closes.”
This would come as bad news for Spurs if they retain an interest in the talented centre-back. Apart from the Lilywhites, Manchester City, Manchester United, Aston Villa, Southampton, and Crystal Palace are also keen on the player.

However, Fry was clear regarding the club’s stance on the player. They want a big bid for him and would want him loaned back for the season as the club looks to re-enter the Championship this season.
“Our position on Ronnie remains the same. It’s going to have to be a big bid to get him and we would try and make sure he was sent straight back to us.”
They were relegated from the second division but have started this campaign in good form. Two wins from two means Grant McCann’s side is in a good position to build on from here and make the cut for the Championship come May 2023.
Spurs could do with a new, young centre-back. Antonio Conte has seemingly trusted Eric Dier, Christian Romero, and Ben Davies at the back. The rest have not been handed regular starts by the Italian manager when his preferred trio is fit.

It’s always good to get in budding talent as early as possible before their value sky-rockets. Edwards is a player who can develop at a good speed and already has attention from several teams. Long story short, Spurs must be quick if they want the teenager.
