Son Heung-min sends warning to Tottenham Hotspur’s new signings after Southampton win

New season, same old Son Heung-min. The South Korea international was on song for Tottenham Hotspur in our opening day 4-1 win against Southampton last weekend as he assisted Eric Dier’s goal that made the scoreline 2-1.

Spurs have made six signings so far in this window, and Destiny Udogie is all but confirmed as the club’s latest arrival on top of that. However, for Son, it’s not the number or the quality of players that matters.

It is how they set up, and how the team plays week in and week out that will decide their fate with regards to winning silverware. Speaking in an interview (h/t Football.London), Son reminded the new signings that they must understand the way the team plays.

“It’s not important (having the strongest Spurs team in recent years). It’s how you set up, how you add to the squad. We have really, really good players but you have to understand the way we play as quickly as possible.”

There’s a reason Antonio Conte started none of the new signings against the Saints. Richarlison was, of course, suspended but it’s fair to assume the Italian manager would have gone with his trusted three in attack either way.

Son sends warning

Ivan Perisic, Clement Lenglet, and Yves Bissouma all came off the bench as substitutes. Djed Spence and Fraser Forster, meanwhile, saw no action throughout the 90 minutes.

Son pointed out the newbies did well on their respective competitive debuts for the club. However, he underlined his claim that just having a good squad is not enough to actually go out and win things.

“They have been training and those guys only had a short amount of time today but they played really well and I think they are enjoying it. What I want to say is having a squad is not as important as how we play. We have a good squad but it doesn’t bring you success so we have to work until the end of the season.”

It’s hard to see where any of Conte’s new signings fit into the starting XI on an instant basis. Perhaps, Perisic is the only one who could be a fixed starter down the left-hand side of their defence, and even that is not 100% guaranteed after Ryan Sessegnon’s performance against Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side.

However, one must keep in mind the amount of quality and depth these players would provide. Udogie is set to be our latest arrival but he is set to be loaned back to Udinese once he is announced as a Spurs player.
