Son Heung-min sends warning to Tottenham Hotspur’s new signings after Southampton win
New season, same old Son Heung-min. The South Korea international was on song for Tottenham Hotspur in our opening day 4-1 win against Southampton last weekend as he assisted Eric Dier’s goal that made the scoreline 2-1.
Spurs have made six signings so far in this window, and Destiny Udogie is all but confirmed as the club’s latest arrival on top of that. However, for Son, it’s not the number or the quality of players that matters.
It is how they set up, and how the team plays week in and week out that will decide their fate with regards to winning silverware. Speaking in an interview (h/t Football.London), Son reminded the new signings that they must understand the way the team plays.
“It’s not important (having the strongest Spurs team in recent years). It’s how you set up, how you add to the squad. We have really, really good players but you have to understand the way we play as quickly as possible.”
There’s a reason Antonio Conte started none of the new signings against the Saints. Richarlison was, of course, suspended but it’s fair to assume the Italian manager would have gone with his trusted three in attack either way.
