Chelsea to investigate racist abuse against Tottenham Hotspur star Son Heung-min in 2-2 draw
Son Heung-min was allegedly abused via a racist gesture from a fan at Stamford Bridge in the London derby between Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur, as per the Evening Standard.
The details of the concerned individual aren’t known as of now. However, a video emerged of a fan at the Shed End apparently making a racist gesture towards the South Korea international.
Manchester United suspended three season-ticket holders after the former Bayer Leverkusen star received online in April 2021 after the club’s 3-1 loss against the Old Trafford outfit.
Two years before that, a West Ham United fan was penalised for racially abusing Son during a Carabao Cup tie. It is sad that instances of racism still persist today in this society to such an extent.
The perpetrators don’t even seem to mind that they are in a place that is surveilled from all angles. The Premier League’s partnership with the Kick It Out campaign has raised awareness in this regard.
But it would always seem futile if severe punishment isn’t meted out that can at least scare these degenerates into not repeating their immoral acts in the future. Education, of course, is the first step toward solving this issue.
However, when that fails, the law must step in. The Metropolitan Police are believed to be involved in the investigation.
At the very least, Chelsea should ban the individual from accessing their stadium in the future if he is found guilty and is proven to be a Blues fan. Spurs toured Son’s home country earlier this summer in the preseason.
