Atletico Madrid forward Yannick Carrasco could move to Tottenham Hotspur before deadline day

Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a £51.4 million move for Atletico Madrid forward Yannick Carrasco. Reuters journalist Fernando Kallas has claimed that North London could be the Belgian’s next destination.

Carrasco moved to Madrid in 2015 from AS Monaco and enjoyed a fruitful spell with the Rojiblancos before moving to China in 2018. However, the Belgian rejoined the La Liga outfit in 2019 and has since once again been an important player for Diego Simeone.

Speaking via Football Daily on Twitter (h/t Express), Kallas revealed that Carrasco could be on his way to Tottenham this summer. The Belgian’s future in Madrid is uncertain at the moment and his release clause could be met before the transfer window ends.

“Yannick Carrasco could be going to Tottenham.

“There are several reports saying that Atletico are still afraid that they will lose Carrasco over the last 48 hours [of the transfer window].

“He has a [£51.4m] release clause but it’s still very uncertain. He could be going to the Premier League for £51.4m.”

Spurs are leading the race for Carrasco. Simeone is keen on keeping a hold of the player. However, the forward’s release clause could pose a danger to Atletico’s hopes.

Carrasco is a versatile forward capable of playing in various positions up front as well as a wing-back. And Antonio Conte is notorious for turning wingers into wing-backs.

The Italian manager currently has Ivan Perisic in the squad as an example of an accomplished forward playing in a deeper position. The Croatian has found success playing as a left-wing-back for Conte at Inter Milan.

For now, Spurs have Ryan Sessegnon as well as an option. The 22-year-old is a talented prospect. The former Fulham star has gotten chances under the current gaffer.

For Atletico, Carrasco featured 44 times in the previous campaign, mostly playing in a deeper role on the left. The 28-year-old contributed with six goals and seven assists.

Carrasco is a mercurial player with brilliant quality on the ball. It remains to be seen whether Tottenham will be willing to pay the Belgian’s release clause to get him from Atletico.
