Fabrizio Romano reveals why Tottenham Hotspur failed to sign Ruslan Malinovskyi

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has explained why Tottenham Hotspur did not sign Ruslan Malinovskyi this summer. Speaking to Arsenal star Oleksandr Zinchenko via his Twitch account (h/t tbrfootball), he gave the reasons.

Spurs were heavily linked with a move for the Ukrainian attacking midfielder this summer. It looked like a deal would go through, but nothing as such could materialise. Now, Romano has explained what happened.

Zinchenko had a chat with the transfer specialist and asked about Malinovskyi. Both are national teammates representing Ukraine on the global stage.

You know that Ruslan wanted to leave. The reality is that Ruslan wanted to leave and wanted to go to Tottenham. They offered a loan with buy option few days ago, but only a verbal proposal, because they knew with Atalanta it was impossible. Atalanta president is in love with Ruslan, he said £40 million or nothing.

Antonio Conte did not sign anyone on the deadline day. The club had finished its business very early as Conte wanted to have a squad ready before the new season began. Spurs signed eight players in this summer transfer window.

But only one of them is a midfielder. The north club does not have any attacking midfielder/s in their squad at present. Four midfielders who are to fight for a place in the starting eleven, are either central or defensive midfielders.

Spurs could have done with an attacking midfielder like Malinovskyi. The 29-year-old was in fine form last season as he scored six goals and assisted another five in 30 league appearances for his side.

The Ukrainian international could also be deployed as a wing-back or further up in the attack. Such versatility in a player could have only helped Conte in the long and congested two months before the World Cup break in November.

It is no doubt that squad depth will play a very vital role in the months ahead. Conte and the fans will hope that missing out on a top midfielder, does not come back to haunt them.
