Antonio Conte feels there is still a big gap between Tottenham Hotspur and other top teams
Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte has given an honest assessment of his squad following the summer transfer window. The Italian feels Spurs still have a long way to go to compete against the top teams.
The North London side have had a big summer. Tottenham made a number of marquee signings. After last season’s top four finish, the club have evidently backed the gaffer for the progress he made.
However, Conte still feels the side lacks the strength to challenge the big boys. Speaking ahead of Spurs’ match against Fulham via Express, the Italian praised the club’s transfer window. But Conte does not feel Tottenham are ready yet to be amongst the elite.
“We did what the club could do.
“We did good things but I have to be honest, if I say we have the squad of a top team there is still too much distance and for this reason we need to know we just started this process to improve the squad.”
The North London side appointed the Italian midway through the 2021/22 campaign. Nuno Espirito did not last long in the Spurs dugout and the club went for a proven manager in Conte.
Tottenham subsequently got the results they needed. The North London side won 10 of the last 14 fixtures in the Premier League to pip rivals Arsenal to the fourth spot. And being in the Champions League has seemingly compelled the hierarchy to spend.
Spurs made a couple of additions in the January window as well before splashing the cash this summer. But Conte is of the opinion Tottenham need to continue spending to be able to qualify consistently for the UCL and compete for the league title.
