Tottenham Hotspur star Rodrigo Bentancur reaches 50 appearances for Uruguay

As confirmed by the club’s official Twitter account, Tottenham Hotspur star Rodrigo Bentancur has reached 50 appearances at the senior level for Uruguay.

The 25-year-old is a regular for the South American giants and is steadily emerging as a major player for Antonio Conte’s outfit in North London. An everpresent in the Spurs playing XI, the former Juventus man is nigh on undroppable.

Tottenham are yet to taste defeat in the league this season and Bentancur is a major reason for that. However, he has had little joy on the international stage, with Uruguay falling to a shock defeat to Asian side Iran.

Given the chasm in quality between the two sides, Uruguay will need to roll up their socks and introspect as to where they were found wanting. La Celeste did have opportunities on the night but failed to take them.

Liverpool star Darwin Nunez and former Reds ace Luis Suarez were unable to find their way past a stoic Iranian defence. Bentancur started the game and lasted 85 minutes before being taken off for former Arsenal midfielder, Lucas Torreira.

The 25-year-old becomes the 37th Uruguayan player to breach the 50 cap mark. Given his age, one would not put it past Bentancur to reach triple digits in the next few years. Just eight players have reached the milestone for the South Americans and Bentancur appears set to join that illustrious list.

Uruguay next face Canada on Tuesday in their last game before the FIFA World Cup. Bentancur could be set to take his tally to 51 appearances should the South Americans decide to go in with a full-strength side on the night.

The 25-year-old continues to see his reputation soar at Tottenham. As long as Conte is at the helm, he is likely to go from strength to strength.

It goes without saying that we would need the former Juventus midfielder to return without any fitness issues. And that is because just after the international break, Spurs take on Arsenal in perhaps one of the most hyped north London derby in recent years.
