Chelsea tried to hijack Spurs’ deal for Richarlison the night before the medical

Writing on the latest edition of his exclusive column for CaughtOffside, popular Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Chelsea tried to hijack Tottenham’s deal for Richarlison at the last minute on the night before his medicals at Hotspur Way.

The Brazilian signed for Spurs in the summer from Everton in a big-money move. Richarlison has already hit the ground running in North London and the 25-year-old can be a key player for Antonio Conte this season.

In eight matches for the Lilywhites across all competitions, Richarlison has scored two goals and provided two assists until now. Beyond these numbers, the former Evertonian has influenced a lot of good things that Spurs do on the pitch.

It has now emerged that Spurs signing Richarlison was not as plain sailing as it seemed to be. The former Watford man had interest from Chelsea and Arsenal as well but the Lilywhites managed to snap him up.

Romano has now claimed that the Blues made a last-ditch attempt to sign Richarlison, trying to hijack the deal on the night before his Spurs medical.

“Chelsea made a bid for Richarlison during the night before his medical tests with Tottenham (made in Brazil); Richarlison had already an agreement with Spurs and same on clubs side, but Chelsea wanted to hijack the deal”

Spurs will be glad that Richarlison chose to join them and did not let his attention waver toward Chelsea. The fact that we qualified for the Champions League could have played a crucial part in Richarlison’s decision.

The 25-year-old would have also been tempted by the prospect of playing under a manager like Antonio Conte. The Italian tactician has the knack for getting the best out of his players and Richarlison would have wanted just that.

With a World Cup coming up in less than a couple of months, the Copa America winner with Brazil will want to be at the best of his game. He has a chance to be the starting striker for his country in the marquee event and this should spur him on.

More Tottenham News:

A huge season awaits Richarlison. He has started off on a bright note and will want to continue in the same vein. Hopefully, he retains this form for the north London derby on October 1.
