International Watch: Pape Sarr win for Senegal but Tottenham defender Davinson Sanchez unused by Colombia
It has been a bit of a disappointing season for Davinson Sanchez at Tottenham Hotspur and the Colombia national team.
He captained his country against Saudi Arabia in a 1-0 international friendly win in June 2022. However, he was left as an unused substitute in Colombia’s latest 4-1 win against minnows Guatemala.
This is despite the fact that Sanchez hasn’t seen much action under manager Antonio Conte this season. Bologna’s Jhon Lucumi started with Millonarios’ defender Andres Llinas at the back, with the latter earning his first senior cap in the process.
Could it be that Sanchez’s inactivity at Spurs is finally costing him a place in his country’s starting XI? Or maybe, it is too early to say that considering this was just an international friendly that the Colombians were expected to win anyway.
After all, a defender who has 49 caps for his country at the age of just 26 cannot be sidelined by his manager at the national level so abruptly. Perhaps, it was just a way for Llinas to earn his debut cap.
Sanchez and Sarr would hope to make World Cup squad
Sanchez’s time at Spurs hasn’t been impressive this campaign. The former Ajax centre-back has made just four appearances this season, with the latest coming in the 6-2 win against Leicester City in the Premier League.
On a day of some brilliant performances from Spurs players, Sanchez failed to impress. He was the player that conceded a needless penalty to help the Foxes open the scoring that day.
Eric Dier, Cristian Romero, and Ben Davies seem to have a stronghold over the starting positions at the back for Spurs. Clement Lenglet, the Barcelona loanee, seems like he is next in the pecking order.
Colombia next play against Mexico in a friendly on Wednesday, September 28. Elsewhere, at least one Spurs player struggling for club appearances seems to be a regular fixture for his national team.

Pape Matar Sarr, with no appearances for Spurs this season, started and played the full 90 minutes in Senegal’s 2-0 friendly win against Bolivia. The Lions of Teranga will be at the FIFA World Cup in Qatar in November, but Los Cafeteros will miss out.
