Spurs News: Atletico Madrid set “laughable” price tag on Tottenham and Manchester United target Jan Oblak

According to Spanish outlet Fichajes (h/t Shields Gazette), Atletico Madrid are willing to sell Jan Oblak for just £27million, with both Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United showing interest.

Both teams would want to secure their interests in the goalkeeping department in the near future. Hugo Lloris, 35, is in the final two years of his contract at N17 while David de Gea, 31, could become a free agent next year.

His contract at Old Trafford expires in the summer of 2023 (Transfermarkt), which is why United’s apparent interest in Oblak seems to make sense despite the two being of a similar age profile.

Oblak is one of the best goalkeepers in world football. At 29, he still has a lot of years ahead of him as a player given the usually longer shelf lives of goalkeepers. As per Transfermarkt, he still has an astonishing six years left on his deal at the Wanda Metropolitano.

What should Spurs do?

The aforementioned valuation set by Los Colchoneros, hence, is considered “laughable” given the Slovenia international’s quality and contract length. Spurs would be wise to pounce on this opportunity.

It could be the coup of a lifetime if they manage to sign a player like Oblak, especially at Atletico’s apparent valuation. United, meanwhile, would not make it easy for us, especially if De Gea’s future is uncertain.

Dean Henderson is an up-and-coming goalkeeper for them who could replace the Spain international, but it remains to be seen if he is trusted to be the club’s long-term number 1. He is currently on loan at Nottingham Forest.

More Tottenham News:

A club legend already, Oblak has played in 360 matches for Atletico across all competitions since joining them from SL Benfica eight years ago.
