Sporting CP plan new contract for Tottenham Hotspur and PSG target Manuel Ugarte with £70m release clause
Sporting CP are planning to offer midfielder Manuel Ugarte a new contract amidst interest from Tottenham Hotspur and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), as per Record (h/t Express).
The 21-year-old was an important presence for manager Ruben Amorim’s team when they faced us in the UEFA Champions League group stage match last month. Sporting ran out 2-0 winners at the Jose Alvalade Stadium.
Now, it is said that the Primeira Liga giants want to insert a mammoth £70million release clause in any new deal that Ugarte signs. Sporting is a hotbed of talent and has produced several players that have succeeded in the Premier League.
Eric Dier is an example close to home while Bruno Fernandes at Manchester United is one of the more recent success stories. Ugarte moved to Sporting from Famalicao last summer and played in 39 games for his new team across competitions.
Ugarte to Spurs?
That underlines how highly his manager thinks of him. Ugarte specialises in the role of a defensive midfielder and could be a wise addition to Spurs’ midfield line which is largely focused on helping the defence as the full-backs and attacking triad create direct goal-scoring chances.
PSG’s interest would worry Tottenham if their interest is genuine in the first place. The Lilywhites, however, would perhaps be taken aback by the release clause if it does end up being entered.
If that valuation is to be met, it would make Ugarte the most expensive transfer in Tottenham’s history, overtaking the £60m they paid Everton for Richarlison
