Tottenham Hotspur told to sign “perfect player” James Maddison from Leicester City to free up Harry Kane

Former Aston Villa centre-forward Gabriel Agbonlahor has told Tottenham Hotspur to make a move for James Maddison as it would free up Harry Kane from his playmaking responsibilities.

As per Football.London last month, Maddison was heavily linked with a move to Spurs in the summer transfer window but nothing materialised. They’ve now gotten an emphatic message from Agbonlahor to retain (or rekindle) their interest in Maddison.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, he said:

“I really feel like they are missing a number 10. The Newcastle game was the sort of game where they needed a number 10 to get in the hole and be that player who needs to be marked.”

Anyone who has followed Kane’s career at Spurs would know that the England international has started dropping deep in recent seasons to create chances for his teammates – akin to what Roberto Firmino made his name doing at Liverpool.

Agbonlahor claims that Maddison’s potential arrival could free up Kane from the responsibility of creating chances and he will then be totally focused on scoring goals. He even urged manager Antonio Conte to change his formation to fit in Maddison.

“All of their midfielders are not goalscorers, they are just tidy on the ball. James Maddison is the perfect player to play in the hole, 100 per cent. It would keep Harry Kane further forward.”

“Spurs’ formation as well, for me, I don’t like it. They could go to a 4-2-3-1 with Son on the left, Kane down the middle, Maddison in the hole, Richarlison or Kuluesvski on the right with Hojbjerg and Bentacur as the two sitters.”

Given his ability and talent, it is a surprise how Maddison only has one senior cap for the England national team. Perhaps some will say that playing for a ‘big six’ club allows the spotlight to shine brighter on a player wanting to break into the national team.

However, it remains to be seen if Spurs will be interested in signing a player who specialises in a position that Tottenham don’t currently deploy. The 25-year-old is currently on a contract that expires in the summer of 2024 (Transfermarkt).
