Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur star Son Heung-min could be on his way out of the club with PSG and Bayern keen

According to German outlet Sport1 (h/t Football.london), Tottenham Hotspur star Son Heung-min could be ready to call it quits after seven glorious years in North London, with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and Bayern Munich among three teams interested in his services.

The South Korean ace joined Spurs in 2015 from Bayer Leverkusen and has since developed into one of the best players to represent us in the Premier League era. With 136 goals and 76 assists in 341 games across all competitions for Tottenham, that reputation is well-earned.

Despite winning the Premier League golden boot last season and earning several other individual accolades, Son’s time at Tottenham have been characterized by a lack of trophies. In fact, the 30-year-old is yet to win any silverware with the club.

Antonio Conte’s arrival at N-17 was supposed to usher in a new era at the club and turn us into serial challengers. While there has been improvements, successive defeats in the Premier League cast doubt on our title credentials.

Tottenham have also been unconvincing in Europe despite their lavish summer spending. One could argue that Conte should be doing better with the squad and resources at his disposal.

Despite signing a contract extension until 2025, it would appear that Son is seeking a new challenge. At 30, he does not have many years left at the top level and it would make sense for him to seek trophies before he eventually calls it quits.

There is no shortage of suitors with Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid all keen on securing his services. A move to any of the trio will give him an instant shot at ending his search for silverware.

PSG and Bayern – a move enticing enough?

Both PSG and Bayern are domestic juggernauts. Real Madrid is a dream club to join for many players – that’s not a secret – and they could guarantee trophies every campaign too.

At PSG, however, Son could have the best chance to play with Neymar Jr, Kylian Mbappe, and potentially, Lionel Messi if the 35-year-old stays at the Parc des Princes for long enough. At Bayern, there is the obvious void left by Robert Lewandowski’s departure to Barcelona this summer.

However, it raises the question of competition. Son is good enough for these two teams but will he start over the options they currently have? He is arguably untouchable at Spurs. At Madrid, perhaps he will the best chance of being a very important player if Karim Benzema, 34, leaves at the end of his contract in the summer of 2024.

But does the 30-year-old Son have long enough to be waiting on the sidelines for regular starts? The interest from these three clubs can be enticing for any player but hopefully, Son recognizes his value for the Lilywhites and decides to stay.

The onus is on Tottenham to show the player that they are serious about challenging for trophies. There is still a long way to go and unless things improve, there is a chance that our star Asian could opt for different pastures.

Losing Son would be a massive blow to not just Tottenham’s prestige but also their chances of a solid rebuild. Losing a star is never a good selling point for a side that is trying to attract top names.
