Fabrizio Romano: Tottenham Hotspur will back manager Antonio Conte in January transfer window
Tottenham Hotspur will try to back manager Antonio Conte in the January transfer window with regard to outgoings and incomings, as per Fabrizio Romano in his exclusive CaughtOffside column.
Conte said at his latest press conference that he doesn’t need to remind the club about the need to bring in quality players during the January window. He says the club already knows the value of that (h/t The Guardian).
“I think the club understand very well the importance of bringing in important players, good players, in January. “
According to Romano, the Lilywhites stand a chance to bring in new names in the winter with a focus also on moving players that aren’t getting regular playing time. He wrote:
“Tottenham will try to support Conte as they also did in the summer. In January they will try to find a solution for players that are not playing regularly; there’s a chance for new signings, for sure.”
What should Tottenham Hotspur do in January?
By common sense, the names of Bryan Gil, Pape Matar Sarr, Japhet Tanganga, and Djed Spence come to mind when thinking about players struggling for playing time.
Gil hasn’t seen much playing time despite Richarlison and Dejan Kulusevski’s recent injuries. Conte instead sided with a 3-5-2 formation with Harry Kane and Son Heung-min up top.
Spence was constantly snubbed from the starting XI despite Emerson’s Royal three-match red card ban in the 3-1 loss to Arsenal. Sarr is yet to make a single appearance for us this season, while Tanganga is getting next to no playing time in our backline.
Hence, it won’t be a bad idea to move these players in order to get them more experience. In terms of incomings, no Spurs fan would mind a quality addition at centre-back with a world-class full-back also won’t hurt.

It remains to be seen what happens on that front considering we do have a pretty stacked squad, especially in the full-back area with Destiny Udogie also set to join our ranks next summer.
