Tottenham Hotspur told they could save £60m by offering Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg a new contract
Tottenham Hotspur are eager to offer a new contract to Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg as a way of recognising his stellar performances this season, as per the Times (Subscription Required).
His current deal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium runs until the summer of 2025, and he is said to pocket £100,000-a-week in wages. The four-time German champion with Bayern Munich has been one of Spurs’ most trusted players in the past couple of years.
His impeccable fitness record and brilliant ability as a defensive midfielder have meant that he has played an astonishing 118 games across competitions for Spurs in the past two and a half seasons.
Hojbjerg has scored eight and assisted 13 goals during that time. Now, former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan has exclusively told Football Insider how much the 27-year-old could be worth to Spurs.
He said:
“This news [contract renewal] doesn’t surprise me because if you let him run down his contract and leave, with the performances he’s put in – you’re probably talking about £60million to bring in a similar player.”
“It makes a lot of sense to keep him around and hope he can keep improving as he enters his prime.”
Real Madrid were linked with a move to sign Hojbjerg in the summer transfer window. This was before they lost Casemiro to Manchester United.
Hence, it’s best for Spurs to tie down arguably their most important player not named Harry Kane or Son Heung-min to a new deal. The Denmark international is also expected to travel to Qatar for
the FIFA World Cup – a tournament which could bring eyeballs if he has a good time with the Danes.

Hojbjerg is in line to start against Olympique de Marseille in the crucial Champions League tie at the Stade Velodrome tonight (1 November). He could prove to be the difference where Spurs need to ensure they don’t lose to qualify for the knockout rounds of the competition.
