Injury News: Tottenham Hotspur confirm Son Heung-min needs surgery after fracture in eye socket ahead of Liverpool tie
Tottenham Hotspur have basically confirmed that Son Heung-min will be left out of the Spurs matchday squad to face Liverpool on Sunday (6 November) after fracturing his eye socket.
The South Korea international started in our decisive UEFA Champions League group stage clash against Olympique de Marseille earlier this week. However, he was subbed off prematurely after being caught in a gory fashion by Chancel Mbemba.
There were fears of a possible concussion after the challenge even though Son was spotted celebrating with his teammates in the dressing room after our 2-1 win was confirmed. Now, the club have confirmed the nature of his injury (h/t Liverpool Echo).
“We can confirm that Heung-Min Son will undergo surgery to stabilise a fracture around his left eye. The South Korea international suffered the injury during the first half of Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League victory at Olympique Marseille.”
“Following surgery, Son will commence rehabilitation with our medical staff and we shall update supporters further in due course.”
This automatically rules him out of the clash against the Reds. With Dejan Kulusevski and Richarlison missing from the squad in recent weeks, Son’s absence comes as a humongous blow ahead of a crucial league fixture.
However, the focus should now be on when Son could be back. Since there is the mention of a rehabilitation period mentioned above, it won’t be a surprise if Son doesn’t play for us before the FIFA World Cup 2022 commences in Qatar.
We play Nottingham Forest at the City Ground on 9 November in the EFL Cup before taking on Leeds United at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium three days later. It would be a shame if the former Bayer Leverkusen man misses these two fixtures as well.

Fans of the South Korea national team will also be facing an anxious wait if their 30-year-old talisman will be fit in time for the FIFA World Cup. The good news for them would be that Kevin de Bruyne recovered in time to play in the 2020 UEFA Euros after fracturing his eye socket three weeks prior to his team’s first match in the competition.
