Tottenham Hotspur to make a punt on bringing back Marcus Edwards in January

According to Portuguese outlet Record (h/t The Express), Tottenham Hotspur are interested in bringing back Marcus Edwards to the club in the upcoming 2023 January transfer window.

The 23-year-old came through the ranks at Spurs, making several appearances for the club’s youth and reserve sides. He managed a solitary senior appearance for the North Londoners, a 15-minute cameo against Gillingham in the League Cup in 2016.

The Englishman called it quits at the N-17 in 2019 when he made the permanent switch to Portuguese de Guimaraes. He has since his footing as a top-level footballer and is thriving at Sporting CP after having made the move to the Jose Alvalade Stadium in 2022.

Edwards is enjoying a fine debut season for Sporting and has garnered seven goals and six assists in 19 appearances across all competitions. He was particularly impressive against Spurs in the UEFA Champions League, scoring the opener for Sporting on his return to North London last month.

His performances have not gone unnoticed with Antonio Conte and Fabio Paratici more than impressed. With Tottenham faltering of late, there might be plans to reinforce the squad in January to endure the season once again does not end with us falling short of silverware.

Likened to Lionel Messi by former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino, Edwards is finally hitting his stride. How difficult it could prove to bring him back now that he is a household name remains to be seen.

Capable of playing in several positions up front and also in midfield, Edwards’s pace and dynamism will add something fresh to the Spurs’ attack. The quartet of Dejan Kulusevski, Richarlison, Son Heung-min and Harry Kane have all impressed but the options below them in the pecking order considerably peter off. Adding Edwards will certainly address it to a degree.

Conte has made no secret of his demands for Tottenham to continue splashing the cash. Given that the recent results have hurt them in the league, Daniel Levy might very well be forced to heed his manager’s words in January.

Letting Edwards leave in 2019 was a blunder that the club can now correct. Whether the player will be keen to return to the place he once called home remains to be seen.
