Tottenham Hotspur and South Korea’s Son Heung-min confirms he is fit for 2022 FIFA World Cup

Tottenham Hotspur and South Korea fans can breathe a huge sigh of relief after Son Heung-min has himself confirmed that he will be fit to participate in the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The South Korean winger picked up a nasty-looking injury in our 2-1 UEFA Champions League group stage win against Olympique de Marseille on matchday 6. Spurs qualified for the knockout rounds as group winners.

However, Son’s injury dampened the mood a little. After initial fears of concussion, the 30-year-old was diagnosed with an eye socket fracture for which he would be needing surgery.

His dreams for the World Cup were thrown in doubt although ever since the diagnosis, there has been optimism about his chances of playing in Qatar. Now, the former Bayer Leverkusen has alleviated any worries in the minds of his fans. He wrote on a social media post on Wednesday (9 November) [h/t the Metro]:

“Hi everyone. I just wanted to take a moment to say thank you all for the messages of support I have received over the last week. I have read so many of them and truly, truly appreciate you all. In a tough time I received a lot of strength from you!”

“Playing for your country at the World Cup is the dream of so many children growing up, just as it was one of mine too. I won’t miss this for the world. I can’t wait to represent our beautiful country, see you soon.”

South Korea may have been the semi-finalists in the 2002 edition but realistically, they don’t boast a squad capable of fancying their chances of making the knockout stages without Son. He is their main man up front.

They would be desperate to have him fit and available from the get-go, especially in a group that has Uruguay, Portugal, and Ghana. The South Koreans don’t play until 24 November – four days after the tournament commences with Qatar vs Ecuador.

It seems unlikely, however, that he will be fit to start in our remaining two games before the season stops for the showpiece event in Qatar. We play against Nottingham Forest tonight (9 November) in an EFL Cup tie before facing Leeds United in the Premier League this weekend.
