Tottenham Hotspur Transfer News: Antonio Conte wants to strengthen Spurs in these two positions in January
Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte wants to add a new forward and a new right-wing-back to his Spurs side in the January transfer window, as per 90min (h/t NottinghamshireLive).
Hence, it is expected that one of Spurs’ three current right-wing-back options could depart during that time. Djed Spence was signed from Nottingham Forest this summer amidst many expectations.
But the 22-year-old has clearly failed to win favour under Conte. Despite Emerson Royal being unavailable for three-and-a-half league matches, Spence has only played 28 minutes of football this campaign spread across four matches in all competitions.
Matt Doherty has been the Italian manager’s go-to man whenever the former Barcelona right-back hasn’t been available or needs resting. It can be argued that despite having depth in that position, we lack a truly world-class right-wing-back.
Spurs must strengthen their team in January
Ivan Perisic has manned the left flank with excellence this campaign and we can use a player like him on the opposite wing as well. As for a forward, it makes sense to add another quality name there.
Many would think that Richarlison’s addition from Everton this summer added to our depth. In reality, it merely compensated for Steven Bergwijn’s departure, at least on paper.
Everton’s Anthony Gordon has been a name linked with us ahead of the winter window. Conte has hinted that Spurs should add players in the January window.
Speaking ahead of Tottenham Hotspur’s 1-1 draw against Sporting CP in the UEFA Champions League group stage, Conte said (h/t Evening Standard):

“I think the club understand very well the importance of bringing in important players, good players in January. I’m not the person who has to explain this to my club. If you ask me in January what happens, when we have to play many other games, we will have to try to do our best.”
