Tottenham Hotspur loanee Sergio Reguilon sends message after Atletico Madrid debut

Tottenham Hotspur left-back Sergio Reguilon was deemed surplus to requirements this summer and was allowed to join Atletico Madrid on a season-long loan spell.

He recently made his first appearance for Los Colchoneros in the 1-0 La Liga defeat against Mallorca away from home. He came on as a 69th-minute substitute after being an unused substitute in his team’s last few games.

He could not make a tangible impact but finally saw light at the end of the tunnel after a troubled return to Spain which was marred by an injury that he has now overcome.

After his cameo, the former Real Madrid left-back took to Instagram and posted the following message (h/t Football.London):

“I feel like a footballer again after seven months. Pissed off by the defeat and the situation of the team, but excited about my debut with @atleticodemadrid and wanting to help the team.”

His last senior appearance came on 16 April in a 0-1 loss against Brighton and Hove Albion in the Premier League. It has been nearly seven months since he last played football – until against Mallorca.

Hopefully, this is the start of a productive loan spell for him at the Wanda Metropolitano. He will hope that he can start in the first-round Copa del Rey clash against Almazon on 12 November.

Spurs have found their left-wing-back options in Ryan Sessegnon and Ivan Perisic but one can’t say Reguilon’s career at Spurs is over.

A decent showing in La Liga can still turn things around for him – if not at Tottenham then perhaps some other club that may then be interested in his services. While Reguilon has finally made his debut for his new club, Harry Winks is yet to make a single appearance for Sampdoria on his loan spell due to a prolonged ankle injury.
