Tottenham Hotspur told to upgrade on Eric Dier, Clement Lenglet, Davinson Sanchez, and Hugo Lloris
Former Rangers and Scotland striker Ally McCoist has asked manager Antonio Conte to upgrade Eric Dier, Clement Lenglet, Davinson Sanchez, and Hugo Lloris at Tottenham Hotspur.
The defensive trio started in Spurs’ 2-0 third-round EFL Cup defeat against Nottingham Forest earlier this week. Speaking after the game, McCoist told talkSPORT (h/t the Express):
“I just don’t think they’re good enough defensively, I really don’t think they’re good enough defensively. Aye [Dier’s got a mistake in him], even Sanchez last night, Lenglet. I just don’t. I think that they’re alright defensively but to compete at the very, very top level…”
Sanchez was beaten too easily by Renan Lodi for the Tricky Trees’ first goal while Jesse Lingard was allowed a very easy header inside the Spurs box for the second. Fraser Forster started in goal in place of Lloris.
However, the France international wasn’t safe from McCoist’s criticisms. The ex-Rangers manager continued:
“I think the goalkeeper makes excellent saves but I think there’s a clanger in him as well, I really do. I think he makes excellent saves but I think there’s a clanger in him.”
By this point, Spurs fans would know the pros and cons of having Lloris. The former Olympique Lyonnais man is a born leader who is a stable and agile presence between the sticks – boasting an impressive fitness record.
However, as the 2-1 loss against Newcastle United showed, the 2018 FIFA World Cup winner does tend to have the odd mistake in him. Despite that, he has been solid for the most part of his spell at N17.
The reason we need to replace him for the long run should have more to do with his age (35) and his contract situation at the club, which expires in the summer of 2024 (Transfermarkt). McCoist is also a brave man for pointing his finger at Dier.

The former Sporting CP star is one of our star defenders but only because we don’t have a lot of quality options in that area. Dier is solid but most would agree he isn’t world-class. A world-class centre-back in January is the need of the hour.
