Tottenham Hotspur star Son Heung-min knows World Cup fate as South Korea confirm 26-man squad
There was hardly any doubt after Son Heung-min recently posted a message saying he won’t miss the 2022 FIFA World Cup for anything, but the Tottenham Hotspur and South Korea star now knows for sure he is making the plane to Qatar.
As confirmed by Fabrizio Romano, Son has been named in the 26-man squad confirmed by manager Paulo Bento. The 30-year-old Spurs winger suffered a massive injury scare earlier this month.
He was substituted prematurely in our 2-1 group stage win against Olympique de Marseille in the UEFA Champions League matchday six. Spurs won the game without him, and Son was spotted in the post-match dressing celebrations as well.
But he had a notable swelling above his left eye. Some feared concussion, but it was later revealed that he had a fracture of the left eye socket.
This injury did not put him at risk of missing the entire World Cup, but it remains to be seen if he will fully recover to start in South Korea’s opening game of the tournament.
Luckily for the Asian country, they are among the countries that will start their journey in the competition a bit late. While the World Cup commences on 20 November, South Korea don’t play until 24 November, when they face Uruguay.
Rodrigo Bentancur is expected to start for the Uruguayans in that game and it will be a brilliant match-up between the two Tottenham stars if they do feature in the game. Son is the headliner in that South Korea squad, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have other stars.
