Callum Wilson makes ‘unbelievable’ World Cup claim about Tottenham Hotspur star Harry Kane

Callum Wilson was one of the 26 lucky players to get the call-up to represent England at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, along with Harry Kane and Eric Dier of Tottenham Hotspur.

Both Spurs stars are expected to be a regular feature in manager Gareth Southgate’s starting XI. Kane is the captain of the country and three goals away from being the record goal-scorer in the history of the Three Lions team.

Hence, it is unthinkable that anyone replaces Kane as the team’s first-choice striker. Wilson has had a good start to the season with Newcastle United where he has helped his team to third in the league table before the World Cup break.

The former Bournemouth striker has won just four caps by the age of 30 and would surely be a relieved man after seeing his name in England’s 26-man squad. He was, after all, not a sure-shot selection like Kane was, especially after Ivan Toney’s form at Brentford.

Now, Wilson has admitted that he knows his role in the England team. But he was careful not to admit defeat to Kane and mentioned that there will be an opportunity for him in the tournament.

He told BBC Sounds’ The Footballer’s Football Podcast (h/t the Mirror):

“I know Harry is an unbelievable player and England captain, he’s going to be the first choice on most people’s team sheets.”

“I know my role, I’m not deluded enough to think I’m going to go to the World Cup and be playing every game. I feel there will be an opportunity and when it comes I’ll be ready to take it with both hands.”

England take on Iran in a matter of hours at the time of writing this article. They are in a group with the USA, Iran, and Wales, which is comparatively an easier group for them to be in.

Kane would, however, want to play in every single minute of these matches even if the Three Lions secure knockout qualification prematurely. After all, he would want to create history and win the FIFA World Cup Golden Boot for the second time.

Wilson’s best hope for playing time will be from the bench and God forbid, a fitness issue to Kane.
