Transfer News: Alasdair Gold answers of Tottenham Hotspur could make a January move for James Maddison

Tottenham Hotspur correspondent for Football. London, Alasdair Gold believes that Leicester City midfielder James Maddison would be ‘superb’ at Spurs, but does not see a January move happening for the player.

Spurs, along with Newcastle United have been interested in the 26-year-old for some time now, with the latter seeing two bids get rejected during the summer for the player.

During a Q&A with Gold (h/t Football. London), he was asked about Spurs making a move for Maddison in January. This is what the correspondent had to say:

“Spurs have had a long held interest in Maddison although those within the club strenuously denied any links to him during the summer. I think he’d be superb at Spurs, if he wanted to come, but I’d be surprised if Leicester let him go after the World Cup without an astronomical bid.”

” Next summer, if he hasn’t signed a new contract, seems the more logical time for him to move on.”

Maddison sees his current contract expire in 2024. He has been the best player for the Foxes this season, so it won’t be surprising to see them offer their star midfielder a new contract soon.

The England international has scored seven goals in 13 league games so far this season. Such good form has earned him a call-up to the national team for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Antonio Conte does not have any attacking midfielders in his squad. While Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Rodrigo Bentancur have been fantastic for us in the middle of the park, the Lilywhites could do with a player like Maddison.

Recent injuries to Richarlison and Dejan Kulusevski showed that the likes of Bryan Gil and Lucas Moura are not trusted enough to start week in, week out. By having the 26-year-old, Conte could deploy him up front with Harry Kane and Son Heung-min.

Or, he could play in our midfield alongside a front three in order to create chances – something that has been a problem area for us. A creator in the middle of the park like Maddison could improve us going forward.

But given the form he is in, coupled with some decent performance in Qatar should he play could make it difficult to pry him from Leicester. It remains to be seen if Spurs do make any move for the midfielder in either January or next summer.
