Tottenham Hotspur star Harry Kane upbeat about England’s chances despite USA stalemate

Speaking in an interview after England’s game against the United States of America as quoted by Independent, Tottenham Hotspur star Harry Kane has claimed that a draw isn’t the end of the world for the Three Lions and is confident of their chances.

In what was set to be a test for the Americans, they passed with flying colours as Gregg Berhalter’s side put in an excellent display against one of the pre-tournament favourites and were unlucky to not get the three points.

The USA should have taken the lead on a couple of occasions in the first half when Weston McKennie blasted the ball over the bar from close range and Chelsea star Christian Pulisic’s venomous shot rattled off the crossbar.

The chance that the Juventus midfielder got should have been converted and McKennie would not have done himself any favours to his chances of landing a Tottenham move with the club said to be interested in the player.

On the overall balance of the game though, both teams pretty much nullified each other as evidenced by their xGs of 0.77 to England and 0.63 to the USA but it felt more like a moral win for the Americans.

What impressed one a lot was the way the Americans went about their game and it showed how much promise and potential they have as a team. Being the second-youngest squad at this World Cup with an average age of just 24 just behind Ghana, this team could keep getting better in the coming years.

Speaking about England’s performance against the USA, which was definitely at the standards expected of them, here is what Kane had to say.

“A draw ain’t the end of the world, and we look forward to the next one. We know we can play better. It’s a draw at a World Cup. No game is easy.

“People thought after our first performance we would landslide every team, but that’s not the case. It leaves us in a really good position. It wasn’t our best performance for sure”

While Kane is right in his assessment that a draw isn’t the end of the world for England and that they are still in a good position to qualify, the Tottenham man will know that his side needs to be more consistent.

The problem with England is that for the quality of players they have in their squad, they should be able to win many more games convincingly than they actually do. At a World Cup, you don’t get many chances and more such bad days will come back to haunt the Three Lions and Harry Kane.
