Spurs Transfer News: Chelsea could battle Tottenham Hotspur for Leeds United’s Illan Meslier

Chelsea have been linked with a move for Leeds United’s Illan Meslier, who was linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur earlier this month.

As per Football.London, the Blues have taken a close look at the 22-year-old goalkeeper with the view of making him the first signing under manager Graham Potter. The English tactician replaced Thomas Tuchel a week after the end of the recent summer transfer window.

This could spell trouble for Tottenham, who have been linked with a move for the Frenchman in recent weeks. Earlier this month, teamTALK (h/t ESPN) claimed that Meslier, along with Everton’s Jordan Pickford and Brighton & Hove Albion’s Robert Sanchez, are on Spurs’ radar.

The Lilywhites have Hugo Lloris as their No. 1 goalkeeper ever since he joined the club from Olympique Lyonnais in the summer of 2012. But it seems that his race will be run at Spurs in a short while.

Spurs should be wary of Chelsea threat

He is already 35 years old and his contract expires in the summer of 2024 (Transfermarkt). Moreover, his mistakes don’t seem to stop.

He is a world-class goalkeeper but he seems to have an error in him. The two goals we conceded against Newcastle United earlier this campaign are examples of that.

Chelsea’s interest in Meslier could be of concern to us, especially if they sort out the situation surrounding Edouard Mendy and Kepa Arrizibalaga. The former was a regular under manager Frank Lampard and initially, Thomas Tuchel.

But in the past few months, he has been challenged well by Kepa for the starting spot. Currently, they have two keepers that would want to play regularly.

If they offload either one of them or figure out a way to bring in a potential upgrade without upsetting the duo, then Spurs should start to worry- especially if their interest in Meslier is real and strong.
