Ivan Perisic backed to help Tottenham Hotspur sign Croatia star Josko Gvardiol

Recently, it was claimed by Tuttomercatoweb as quoted by Football.London that Tottenham Hotspur could use ‘secret weapon’ Ivan Perisic to sign Josko Gvardiol from RB Leipzig.

It has been claimed that the Bundesliga outfit could charge £70million in transfer fees for the defender they signed just last year to fill in the voids left by Dayot Upamecano and Ibrahima Konate.

And he has done that in an excellent manner. He is Leipzig’s star man in defence and has already featured in 19 games across competitions for his club this season.

Those who would have been scouting him at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar would have nothing but positives to say about his performances there, and would have had a big sample size to base their assessment on as well.

Gvardiol has been rock solid for the Croats at the back, with the valiant performance in the 0-0 group-stage draw against Belgium being, by far, his best performance for the national team. A defender of his ilk, who is still just 20 years old, would be a dream signing at N17.

And former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie believes seeing a familiar face in Ivan Perisic, the 33-year-old Croatian legend at the international level, would make his decision easier. He exclusively told Football Insider:

“Of course it is. Coming to London from another country, it is good to have somebody there that you can bounce off. I think it is great to help settle in, however good a player you are.”

“And the word is that Gvardiol is phenomenal. It does help. They have got to have somebody that can show you the ropes, that can be a good pull.”

For Spurs, the next two transfer windows should be about bringing in quality rather than quantity. With each world-class player we sign, we reduce one out of the 11 positions we have to worry about in manager Antonio Conte’s starting XI.

Right now, world-class players are needed in central defence, right-wing-back, goalkeeper (as Hugo Lloris’ successor) and arguably in midfield to compete with the immaculate pairing Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Rodrigo Bentancur.
