Arsenal in transfer race with Tottenham Hotspur for the signing of Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie

Tottenham Hotspur and North London rivals Arsenal are in the race for the signature of Bayern Leverkusen star Piero Hincapie, according to Calcio Mercato (h/t The Sun).

The Gunners have set their sights on the Ecuador international ahead of the January transfer window. Other top clubs around Europe are also eyeing the 20-year-old. From Italy, Napoli, AC Milan, Inter Milan and Roma are all interested in the defender.

However, the Bundesliga outfit are reluctant to part ways with Hincapie. The Ecuadorian is valued at around £25 million. He has been a regular at the German outfit since his arrival.

The 20-year-old signed for Leverkusen in the summer of 2021 from Club Atletico Talleres in Argentina. In the current campaign, the defender has made 18 appearances in all competitions for the Balck and Reds, scoring one goal.

Hincapie is a versatile player capable of playing centre-back and left-back. He also featured extensively for Ecuador at the 2022 World Cup. However, La Tri could not make it past the group stages of the competition.

Currently, Arsenal are at the top of the table in the Premier League. The Gunners have been solid defensively, with William Saliba impressing many. Mikel Arteta also has Gabriel Magalhaes, Ben White and Rob Holding to call upon.

On the other hand, Tottenham are still playing with Ben Davies in the back line. The Wales international is a natural left-back. However, Antonio Conte has preferred him in the team. Clement Lenglet is yet to inspire as well at the North London side since his arrival on loan.

Defensively, Spurs have looked shaky this season under the Italian manager. We seem to always give away the first goal to the opposition. Eric Dier has been a bit underwhelming in the current campaign. Cristian Romero’s injury issues have once again hampered his game time.

The North London side seemingly need a left-footed centre-back. However, Hincapie is still young and inexperienced. Thus, it remains to be seen whether the club will opt to sign him in the upcoming transfer windows.
