Inter Milan and Italy’s Alessandro Bastoni confirms Tottenham Hotspur transfer talks
Inter Milan defender Alessandro Bastoni has confirmed there was contact by Tottenham Hotspur for his services in the recent past.
The Lilywhites were eager to sign the Italy international in the summer transfer window, but no deal materialised. As per Evening Standard, he was unwilling to force an exit from the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium, and the club weren’t open to a sale.
Eventually, Spurs ended up with Clement Lenglet from Barcelona, who signed on a season-long loan. That is definitely a stop-gap signing and it remains to be seen if we rekindle our interest in the 23-year-old Italian defender.
But at least Bastoni has confirmed that Spurs were willing to get a deal over the line for him. Speaking to Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport (h/t Evening Standard), he said:
“There was some contact, but I’m happy I stayed at Inter. With Conte, we entered the pitch knowing perfectly what we needed to do, because everything was studied in a maniacal manner.”
Bastoni seems to hold manager Antonio Conte in good stead. They worked wonders together during their time together at I Nerazzurri and won the Scudetto in the 2020-21 season.
Spurs fans would love to see the reunion. The 1.90 meter-tall centre-back has an impeccable ability to read the game in defence and at his age, he can only get better with time.
Bastoni’s contract situation could be of interest to Spurs. His current deal has just over 18 months left on it, which would certainly be making Inter anxious.
