David Beckham hails Tottenham Hotspur star Harry Kane for stepping up vs France

England icon David Beckham has hailed Tottenham Hotspur star Harry Kane as a “true leader” for stepping up to take the penalty against France. Unfortunately, the Spurs striker missed from the spot to equalise in the 84th minute.

The Three Lions took on Les Bleus at Al Bayt Stadium on Friday (10 December) in the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup. However, Gareth Southgate’s team lost 2-1 to the reigning champions. The 29-year-old had converted a penalty against Hugo Lloris earlier in the game.

Former Manchester United star Beckham took to Instagram (h/t Mirror) to back Kane. The ex-midfielder, who garnered 115 caps for England during his playing career, believes the national side will do better in the future.

“Our boys will continue to grow. It’s always the worst feeling waking up after being knocked out of a tournament but our players , Gareth the staff and all our fans can be proud of this team.

“It takes a true leader to step up in these moments and that’s what our captain did, the next time it will be a different ending we walk away with our heads held high.”

Beckham is no stranger to disappointment with the Three Lions. The 47-year-old took part in three World Cups with England but failed to make it too far in the tournaments.

Kane has led his national side close to silverware. During the 2018 World Cup in Russia, Southgate’s team made it to the semi-finals. However, Croatia managed to get the better of them.

Euro 2020 was another successful tournament for the Three Lions. England made it to the final. But Italy pipped the team led by the Spurs striker in a penalty shootout.

The 29-year-old has been in fine form for the North London side in the current campaign. In 22 appearances in all competitions this season, he has scored 13 goals.

During the 1998 World Cup, in the Three Lions’ round of 16 fixture against Argentina, Beckham picked up a red card for lashing out at Diego Simeone. However, the midfielder redeemed himself with a free kick against Greece, helping England qualify for the 2002 World Cup.

Kane still has a few years left in the game. It remains to be seen whether the 29-year-old will be able to take his national side all the way at Euro 2024 in Germany.
