Romano gives update on future of Tottenham target Emiliano Martinez after World Cup heroics for Argentina

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has given an update on the future of Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, who has attracted Tottenham Hotspur’s interest.

Around three weeks back, Fichajes (h/t BirminghamLive) named Tottenham Hotspur, Napoli, and Atletico Madrid as three teams that had ‘interest’ in the Argentina international. Now, Romano has given his two cents on the former Arsenal man’s future.

Speaking on the House of Champions Podcast, he said:

“I don’t see him moving in January because the goalkeeper market is very particular. It is very different. Look at [Dominik] Livakovic for example. He has been fantastic for Croatia but there is nothing ongoing because that market is different. All top clubs have a goalkeeper right now.”

“The real priority for Emi Martinez at the moment is to focus on Aston Villa. There is a new manager; they have a project for the future and they want Martinez to be a part of that project.”

A little about Martinez. He is one of those that have bloomed very late in their careers. It wasn’t until a stretch of games for Arsenal in the tail end of the 2019-20 season where he proved his worth.

The Villans signed him that summer and the next year, he made his senior debut for La Albiceleste. He starred for them in their 2021 Copa America win and then the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

His unbelievable dominance in penalty shootouts and the mindgames he plays with the opposition make him Oliver Kahn-esque in the way he can scare those in front of him. He is elite, and there are no two ways about that.

The 30-year-old, however, has a long, long time left on his contract at Villa Park that only expires in the summer of 2027 (Transfermarkt). Given his age, recently accumulated hype, and contract situation, this isn’t the best time to sign him.

But if an opportunity arises and a deal makes sense financially, perhaps Spurs can give him the pedestal whereby he can try and replicate the success he has found on the international stage at the club level.

Hugo Lloris isn’t getting any younger and we need to find a replacement for him. If not Martinez, then a younger goalkeeper wouldn’t be shabby as well.
